Elk

Elk are the noisiest ungulates due to their vocal communication of identifying each other as well as communicating danger. Male (bull) elk have antlers which they use to compete with other males for females (cows).

  • Elk are also called wapiti, a Native American word that means “light-colored deer.”
  • A set of antlers on a mature bull can weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Elk live in a variety of habitats, from rainforests to alpine meadows and dry desert valleys to hardwood forests.
